Magento 2 migration and integration of Akeneo PIM 4

Since 1969, Zweitausendeins has stood for unconventional book and music retailing with its own publishing house. In keeping with the name borrowed from Stanley Kubrick's cult film, the programme includes classics from film, music and literature, but also focuses on politics and satire.

Project

Zweitausendeins is currently changing its profile: online sales are now taking centre stage, while the previous distribution via retail shops - apart from the shop in Leipzig's Karl-Liebknecht-Straße - is being handled via partnerships with booksellers. The company, which has been based in the book city of Leipzig since 2011, has chosen Netresearch, a local service provider with many years of e-commerce experience, to further professionalise its existing web presence. Previously, Zweitausendeins used a first-generation Magento shop, but Magento 1 is no longer supported by the manufacturer. In addition, an in-house development from a smaller manufacturer was previously used for data management, which was to be replaced by a Product Information Management System (PIM) as a more future-proof solution.

Realisation

In order to meet these requirements, a replatforming from Magento 1 to the current Magento version 2 was carried out. This is a modernisation in which the shop application is restructured and its functions are adapted to current requirements. A particular challenge here is the migration of the existing data. At Zweitausendeins, an ERP system (Enterprise Resource Planning) forms the system basis for data and business processes. Of course, this also applies to the current product data. The new Akeneo 4 was implemented as an additional PIM system for qualitative data enrichment in the sense of modern e-commerce. It impresses with its integration capability and clear handling. We thus enable the responsible employees at Zweitausendeins to maintain their product catalogue simply, intuitively and effectively. Our in-house development DataHub is used as a data hub for the necessary and smooth data transfer between ERP, PIM and the final shop system.

Magento 2 Migration

We migrated our shop to Magento 2 with Netresearch and introduced a new PIM with Akeneo.
The new PIM was a good decision and supports us greatly in our day-to-day work with article master data for our web shop through to our merchandise management system.

Result

The "trendsetter for the cool intellect" - as Zweitausendeins describes itself - presents itself on its website as a shop with currently 5,500 products. Behind the classic shop layout, the latest Akeneo PIM and the current Magento version conceal modern technologies that offer the benefits of contemporary software development. These include, above all, a modular structure that scores with expansion options, automation through continuous integration/continuous delivery and, finally, the working methods of an agile DevOps culture. The new site thus combines a no-frills design that matches the profile of Zweitausendeins with current web standards and equips the customer perfectly for its new focus in the e-commerce sector.
